Joyce had her master's degree and was a revered teacher in the Bellingham, WA area for over 50 years. Her family, the Gundersons, were mainly teachers. The Gills were a prominent Portland family from England, with a well documented family history.
In 1949, her youngest son died upon childbirth.
She died of inoperable cancer of the pancreas, just past her 85th Birthday.
Her husband and five of her children survived her.
Since her passing, her husband John, three siblings and two more of her sons have died.
She has now three surviving children, one daughter and two sons.
