GLENWOOD OPINION Oct 18, 1909

THOMAS H. BROWN DIES

Thomas H. Brown, an old-time settler of Glenwood, he having been here since 1857, and a first class mason by trade, had his third stroke of paralysis Tuesday night last, from the effects of which he expired Saturday morning.

The funeral serices were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home on lower Locust street, being conducted by Rev. R. W. Burton of the Congregational church, assisted by Rev. W. N. Graves of the Methodist church.

A large number of old friends and neighbors were present to pay a last tribute of respect to the departed one, which went to show the high esteem in which he was held in this community.

Two daughters and their husbands were here from a distance, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Goheen of Adams, Neb, and Mr. and Mrs. John Pelham of Dawson, Neb.

The pall-bearers were, John Hanson, J. L. Bellatti, R. C. White, B. F. Jones, J. W. Laraway and Asael Lambert

The following is given us for publication:

Thomas Hartson Brown was born at Mount Holly, New Jersey, August 19, 1833 and died at Glenwood, Iowa, October 16, 1909 at 2:30 a. m., aged 76 years, 1 month and 27 days.

At the age of 21 years he came west and in 1855 to Omaha, Neb., then a trading point consisting of a black smith shop, tavern and a store.

In 1856 he came to St. Marys and Pacific City, Iowa. In 1857, he came to Glenwood and for 40 years has occupied his late home.

By trade he was a brick mason of exceptional ability and was recognized as such by his brother masons, but was never known to boast of it.

On January 30, 1861, he was married to Mary Ann Pennette Frizzell, to whom were born three sons, Thomas Allison, Glenwood; Samuel Pike, Columbus, Neb.; Carlile, Happy, Texas. On September 16, 1865, Mrs. Brown died.

On September 2, 1869, he was married the second time to Mary Matilda Turner to whom seven children were born, as follows: Walter Scott, Glenwood; L. Maude Goheen, Adams, Neb.; Grace Anna Pelham, Dawson, Neb.; Clara-who died in infancy;- Clyde LeRoy, Los Angeles, Cal.; Harriet and Nellie Gertrude, Glenwood. He is survived by his loving wife, five sons and four daughters.

He was christened in the Methodist Episcopal church in infancy. In his loving and forgiving nature, we see the spirit of the Christ throughout his whole life.

Tuesday evening last he sustained a severe paralytic stroke which terminated in his death early Saturday monring, after lying for four days in a state of coma.

Thus we lay to rest our beloved husband and father, Thomas Hartson Brown.
