BIBA, HELEN MILDRED—Helen Mildred Peterson Biba was born to Walferd C. Peterson and Rosalie (Chaney) Peterson on July 22, 1908, at Geneva. She passed away Feb. 16, 1997, at the Heritage of Geneva, at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 25 days. She was one of nine children in the family.

She attended grade school in Geneva and graduated from Geneva Public High School in 1926. The following summer she attended Kearney State Teacher’s College and then began teaching in country schools. She then attended the University of Nebraska the following year and returned to Geneva, where she again taught in country schools in Fillmore county.

She met Fred Biba at a dance in Geneva and on Dec. 20, 1930, they were married, after getting permission from her school board.

Fred worked for his brother, Bill, in construction work. This resulted in many moves to many different communities, while Fred worked on various construction projects.

Daughter, Barbara, was born in Geneva in 1932, and son Frederick, was born in Geneva in 1936.

After their daughter Barb, completed the third grade, Helen remained at home during the school year. She continued to do this until their son, Frederick, graduated from high school. The family would often join Fred at construction sites during the summer months.

During this time, Helen kept busy with many activities.

She was active in a number of organizations—Chapter “O” of P.E.O. for over 50 years, the congregational Church in Geneva for over 50 years, was a 50 year member of Eastern Star, member of Tuesday Afternoon Kensington, Ruth Church circle and the Daughters of the Nile, Sunday school superintendent, Girl Scout Leader.

When Dr. Dave Portwood moved to Geneva to start his practice, Helen was his first dental assistant.

After Frederick graduated from Geneva high School and Barbara graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1954, Helen and Fred began living in various states. Fred had begun working for the Bureau of Reclamation and was assigned to large dam projects. For the next 15 years they traveled and lived in South Dakota, northern and southern California, Wyoming, Arizona and Colorado.

Making friends easily, Helen continued her involvement with the various organizations she had joined in Geneva.

When Fred retired in 1970, they returned to their home in Geneva and were able to renew old acquaintances.

On her 70th birthday, her daughter and son-in-law and granddaughter took her to New York City where they all had a grand time. On her 80th birthday, Frederick invited Helen and Barb to come to Pasadena, Calif., where they spent days sight-seeing with Frederick and his daughter, Kyla. Helen loved both of these trips.

In September of 1996, Fred and Helen celebrated his 90th birthday with their two children, three grandchildren and one great-grandson present. This was the first and only time Helen met her great-grandson, Nicholas, who was a month old.

This past December, Helen and Fred celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. In later years, Helen reflected about her life and remembered most all the moves she made. She never tired of this, as she always enjoyed meeting new people and seeing new places. Helen enjoyed excellent health throughout her life. She entered Heritage in August of 1996, and joined her husband Fred, who has been there for several years. She was an independent and self-sufficient woman, throughout her long and active life, and in later years worked hard to maintain that independence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walferd and Rosalie; sisters, Leta Tomlinson, Dazel Camp, Murle Abrahamzon, Rose Hammond and Marion Calder; and brothers, John, Frank and Paul Peterson.

She is survived by her husband, Fred; daughter, Barbara Watkins; son, Frederick; grandchildren, Philip Watkins, Susan (Randall) Badsky, Kyla (Valian) Staggs and great-grandson, Nicholas Badsky.

Funeral services were conducted from the Congregational Church in Geneva at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, with the Rev. Wanda W. Bennett officiating.

Nancy Cradduck accompanied Bill Bennett who sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and “We’ve Only Just Begun”.
Casket bearers were Jim Biba, Marlin Domeier, Richard Kohler, Dick and Tom Manning and David A. Portwood.

Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
