MRS. JAMES L. CARTER DIES
Mrs. James L. Carter, 620 State Street, a resident of Emporia since 1894, died Friday afternoon in Newman Memorial County Hospital, whre she gad been a patient since December, 1967.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel. They will be conducted by the Rev. David W. Isaac, pastor of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
Mrs. Carter was the former Cora Julia Barger, daughter of William H. and Julia B. Rizer Barger. She was born July 4th, 1875, in Eureka, attended the Southern Kansas Academy in Eureka. She and Mr. Carter moved on the day of their wedding to Emporia, where Mr. Carter, a registered pharmacist, was preparing to open the Carter Drug Store, which he operated for 36 years. Mrs. Carter was a member of the First Congregational Church. For many years she had been one of the most active members of the Women's Fellowship of the church. Her homemade bread was sold throughout the year to raise money for church projects and the other articles, particularly aprons, which she made were among the familiar items offered for sale at the annual church bazaar. Mrs. Carter was a member of Miriam Chapter 14, Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died Dec. 13th, 1921, and by two brothers, John and Harry Barger, and three sisters, Mary E. Lake, Luella E. Hollingsworth and Edna L. Barger. She is survived by one son, James W. Carter, 626 1/2 State St.; one granddaughter, Mrs. R. A. (Helen) Fitzwilliam, Sedalia, Mo., and two great-grandchildren, Anna and Richard Fitzwilliam, Jr., Sedalia.
