Herbert Bartelt
Port Washington resident Herbert C. Bartelt died Saturday, Aug. 2, at St. Michael's Hospital in Milwaukee. He was 84.

Mr. Bartelt was an active man who enjoyed walking and often gave of his time to help elderly people until developing Guillain-Barre syndrome; a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the nervous system.

Mr. Bartelt was born in Mequon on March 15, 1919, the son of Herman and Minna Schultz Bartelt.

He grew up on his family's farm and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

On Aug. 20, 1943, he married Vivian Bruggink at First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove. She died May 3, 1969.

Mr. Bartelt married Eunice DeBroux Dohrwardt on Oct. 5, 1973, at Frieden Evangelical Church in Port Washington. She died in April of this year.

Mr. Bartelt worked as a machinist at Simplicity Manufacturing in Port Washington for 43 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Frieden Evangelical Church, IAM Local 1430 and the Royal Neighbors of America Saukville Camp.

"He was very involved in his church," his son, Robert said. "He used to drive a lot of older people around, taking them where they needed to go."

Mr. Bartelt is survived by two sons, Robert (Barbara) of Port Washington and Ronald (Lauren) of Saukville; five stepchildren, David Dohrwardt of Milwaukee, Donald (Lisa) Dohrwardt of Fredonia, Dollie (Todd) Mullins of Keensburg, Ill., Darlene (Kenneth) Harvey of Plymouth and Darrell (Debra) Dohrwardt of Saukville; 24 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and his sister Delores Leppa of Port Washington.

In addition to his wives, Mr. Bartelt was preceded in death by one sister, six brothers, two step-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Frieden Evangelical Church in Port Washington. The Rev. Mark Voll, pastor of the church officiated.

Burial was in Union Cemetery in Port Washington.

The family suggested memorial to Frieden Evangelical Church.
