Earned Civil Engineering degree from Lehigh University in 1874 (with additional course work in mining, metallurgy & chemistry). After a couple of C E gigs, in 1879 he began working as a chemist at Arlington Mills in Lawrence, Essex, MA. He moved up to a departmental superintendant in 1882 and then was made resident agent in 1899. He retired from the mill in 1913. After a European excursion, he opened an office working as an consulting engineer, specializing in textile mill conditions. He retired sometime between 1920 and 1930.

He took an active part in his community while living in Methuen, Essex, MA. At various times he served as trustee of Broadway Savings Bank, a director of Lawrence National Bank and of Merchants' Trust Co of Lawrence, and president of National Bank of Methuen.

In 1878 he married Eliza Jones Cutler, a native of Digby, Nova Scotia. Together they had four children: Elsie C, Miriam, Isaac and Hugh.
