From the Northfield News:

Mrs. Agnes Hofstad, a former Northfield resident, died on September 26,1979, while hospitalized for a broken hip. Nee Anges Marie Lundeberg, she was born on May 27,1892, at Kenyon, the eldest of the ten children of the Rev. Knut Olav Lundeberg and Amanda (Holmquist) Lundeberg. She was baptized at Gol Lutheran church of rural Kenyon and confirmed at Wahpeton, N.D. She graduated from East high school in Minneapolis. Graduating from St. Olaf College in the class of 1916, she taught school at Randall, Iowa, until her marriage to Olaf Ludwig Hofstad on May 30,1918. She joined him in Boston where he was serving in the United States Navy. In 1920, on completion of her husband's theological training at Luther Theological seminary, the couple served the Whitehall, Wis., Lutheran parish for five years. In 1925, called by the Lutheran Mission Board, they traveled to Madagascar with their two young sons. In 1932 they returned to the United States and, from 1933-36, they lived at Taylor, Wis., serving four congregations. By this time, three daughters had joined the family. In 1936 they returned to Madagascar serving there until 1957, except for a brief period in Forest City, Iowa, where the Rev. Hofstad served on the faculty of Waldorf college. After retirement, the Hofstads lived in Northfield and in California. Her husband preceded her in death in February of 1975. Since that time she had lived at the Northfield Retirement Center and with her five children at various times. Most recently she had resided with her daughter, Louise, and family in Minneapolis. She is survived by her five children: Rolf of St. Paul; Harold of Baton Rouge, La.; Gudrun of Long Island, N.Y.; Louise of Minneapolis, and Miriam of Berkeley, Calif.; also by 22 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Surviving brothers and sisters are: Dr. Karl Lundeberg of Minneapolis, Marie Gulick (Mrs. C.M.) of Paradise, Calif., William Lundeberg of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Elfrieda Farseth of Minneapolis, Mrs. Arndis Nestande of Minneapolis, Frithjaf Lundeberg of Pittsburgh, Calif., and Mrs. Kathryn Steward of Mesa, Ariz. A brother, Dr. Olav K. Lundeberg, and a sister, Anne Headington, preceded her in death. The Memorial Service was at the St. Johns Lutheran church, Northfield, on Saturday, September 29. She is laid to rest beside her husband at the Oaklawn Cemetery, but her Spirit is at home with the Lord. The family requests that memorial gifts be given to the American Lutheran Church Mission in Madagascar.
