Harold was born in Whitehall, Wisconsin, to Agnes (Lundeberg) and Louis Hofstad. He spent most of his childhood in Madagascar, where his parents served for many years as Lutheran missionaries. He attended St. Olaf College until enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the start of WWII. Harold spent the war on a P.T. boat in the Phillipines and returned from the war a life-long pacifist. He then completed his education at St. Olaf, receiving a degree in English, and earned a Master's of Divinity degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was ordained as a Lutheran minister and served a number of congregations for 20 years in North Dakota and Minnesota. Harold left the ministry to work as a counselor in the field of substance abuse.
Harold married Anna Kathryn Roe on September 4, 1948. He spent his last four years in Wimberly, Texas.
