Nationally known San Diego desert artist

Born in Delaware, Ohio, Howard Little was one of the early desert artists. Little was a nationally known San Diego artist whose rich-tone paintings of the desert, ocean and redwoods have been exhibited in galleries in Washington, DC, Denver, Colorado, and San Diego.

Little studied art and engineering at Ohio State University, and in 1913 moved to Denver where he studied with Henry Reed and became a serious painter. In 1921, he moved to Chula Vista, California and ran a chicken ranch and did commercial illustration as well as fine art painting. In the 1940s, he taught art in the San Diego County schools, and he was a member of the San Diego Art Guild. In San Diego he worked with such artists as Maurice Braun, Charles Fries, Alfred Mitchell and Elliot Torrey.

Find A Grave contributor Meridee D Dunn added: Howard was the son of Charles Otis Little (1839-1898) and Julia Griswold Howard (1857-1942). They are buried in Delaware County, Ohio. His wife was Mildred S Rinker (1894-1971). They had one daughter - Mildred L Little.
