John Blann was born around 1843 in Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri, the son of Zachariah and Kisiah Ogle Blann. Until he enlisted, he had worked the home farmland as his father was unable to do so at that time due to illness.

On 27 Sept. 1862, he enlisted at age 18, at either Laclede, or Brookfield, Missouri for a period of three years. Both towns were listed in the pension application of his mother, Keziah. John served under the command of Col. Morgan and was a private in CO., G., 18th Regiment of Missouri Volunteers.

He died of exposure in the field at #6 Division Hospital, Corinth, MS.

In the CO., G., Regiment Descriptive Book: John is listed as follows;
Age 18, 5'8 1/2", Complexion fair, Eyes blue, hair light, and born in Lexington, Missouri

John's mother, Kesiah/Keziah Blann filed for an "Original Pension of a Mother" on John's service record in 1890 while living in Lake Co., California.
