Charles Bingham was born to the late Charles and Irene Bingham on September 17, 1945 in Jacksonville, Florida. His family moved to Fort Lauderdale when he was a child. In 1964, he graduated from Dillard High School. After graduation, he attended Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina and Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida, majoring in Sociology. In 1967, he returned in Fort Lauderdale.
On January 6,1969, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Annie B. Owens and to this union was born four children; three sons and one daughter.
Realizing his need for a Savior, he surrendered his life to the Lord and became a dedicated and faithful member of Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church.
Charles began a successful career with the Broward County sheriffs Office hi January, 1969. Over the years, he served the department as a Detention Deputy, Road Patrol Deputy, Undercover Narcotics Officer, Surveillance Officer and Team Leader. While working in Narcotics, he was promoted in March 1973 to Sergeant. For the past several years, he has been a Sergeant in BSO County wide Operations where he served as one of the Supervisors for the School Resource Officers. Charles' personnel file is filled with numerous certificates and glowing letters of commendation and appreciation for his dedication to duty and professionalism. During his thirty-one (31) years of service, he worked under many administrations, including Sheriff Nick Navarro, Sheriff Bob Butterworth and Sheriff Ken Jenne. Charles was presented in January 1999 by Sheriff Ken Jenne with a uniformed longevity service bar for over thirty years of continuous service.
His love for children and sports extended into the community where he lived. He was an active member of the West Broward Lauderhill Optimist Club. This organization is the umbrella of the Sport activities in the City of Lauderhill. Charles served numerous offices in this club, President, Vice President, Secretary and Chairman of the Election Committee.
Charles devoted many hours as an Optimist football coach. He was a caring and understanding coach. His players knew that they could always depend on him for guidance and love. He helped many young boys to build their character and their confidence as they built their skills in football.
On Sunday, May 7, 2000, our Heavenly Father decided to transpose our beloved Charles Bingham from mortality to immortality. He gently lifted his spirit from this earthly world. The decision was made that on this day, "he would fly away and be at rest."
He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted wife — Ann; four children ~ Shawn (Yolanda), Anthony (Deserria), Amy and Kevin; one sister — Nancy (Fred) Myrick; two grandchildren ~ Autumn and Anthony Charles, Jr.; also a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and beloved friends.
