MRS. BELL, 78, PIONEER WOMAN SUCCUMBS HERE
CAME TO IOW IN COVERED WAGON SEVENTY YEARS AGO

Mrs. Mary A. Bell, 78, 707 East State Street, died at her home at 11 o'clock Saturday night following a two years illness caused by a complication of diseases.

As Mary Ann Carrott she was born March 15, 1856, in Illinois, the daughter of William and Priscilla Carrott. She came to Iowa when 8 years old with her parents in a covered wagon crossing the Mississippi River in a ferry boat and settling in Owen's Grove. When 12 years old the family moved to what is known as the Carrott neighborhood. When she grew to womanhood she taught school as a vocation.

She was married to Malcolm G. Bell, April 5, 1878, and after a few years moved to her country home near Nora Springs, where she reared her family moving to Mason City 26 years ago.

Six children were born to the couple, Mabel, Lulu, William, Malcolm and Merle. One baby died in infancy.

Her parents, husband, one daughter; Lulu A. Tourtellott, of Rockwell; one son, William of Nora Springs; four grandchildren; one brother, Oldham Carrott; three half-brothers and one sister, Sarah Milloy have preceded her in death.

Surviving her are Mable P. Albertson of Rockwell, Malcolm of Nora Springs; and Merle, at home; 12 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two brothers; Buron and James Carrott of Rockford. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mason City.

Burial will be at Nora Springs in the family lot. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. A. W. Caul in charge. The Rev. W. H. Spence of the First Methodist Church will assist.

All relatives are requested to meet at the home at 1 o'clock on Tuesday preceding the church service.
