John Gukeisen was born in Dubuque, Iowa on January 21, 1874. His parents were John and Katherina Heitgen Gukeisen. They moved to South Dakota in 1880. John grew up farming in a large German Catholic family. He was one of 15 children.

John married Margaret "Maggie" Stemper in 1902.


They farmed in Franklin Township, Bon Homme County, South Dakota and then moved to Parkston in 1910. 



John & Margaret raised a large Catholic family of ten children.

Margaret passed away on December 17, 1935 in Hutchinson County, South Dakota. In June 1949, John moved to Deadwood, South Dakota to live with his daughter, Frances Stirling. He passed away on March 21, 1950.
