Ray J Baum, age 89, loving dad, grandpa, and brother, peacefully returned to his Father in Heaven and the arms of his sweetheart on Sun., July 8, 2012, at his home in Fruitland, with his son and daughter-in-law, Veron and Sheila at his side.
Dad was born Feb. 10, 1923 in Fruitland, Utah to David William and Hazel Sweat Baum and was the oldest of 16 children. They lived in Duchesne until he was in the 5th grade, and then moved to Fruitland. He married Mary Valina Pace on Feb. 8, 1943; there together they would raise their seven children. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple Sept. 13, 1950.
Dad fought for our country for three years in WWII, stationed in Burma, India. He was the work director when the Fruitland Church was built then served as the branch president three times along with many other church callings. He was a member in the American legion for many years and held many other church callings. He was a member in the American legion for many years and held many positions. He worked as a farmer, along with construction, drove the school bus, and worked in the lunch kitchen, to raise his family. Dad loved to fish, hunt, play horseshoes, watch the Utah Jazz or anything to spend time with his kids and grandchildren. His family was the most important to him. Dad was known for the size of his hands, they were as big as his heart. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him. The world was a better place because he was in it.
He is survived by his children Elaine Adams, Hooper; Johnny (Carolyn), Woodscross; Robert (DaVona), Hanna; Vernon (Sheila), Fruitland; Paul (Holly), Tabiona; Bruce (Lisa), Elsinore; Julie Smith (Bart), Grantsville; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and four great-great- grandchildren; brothers, Wayne (Myra) Scottsdale, Ariz.; Ferris (Annie), Flagstaff, Ariz.; Bradford (Ann), Duchesne; sisters, Madge Najara (Fred) Cottonwood, Ariz.; Margie Mansanarez (Richard), Idaho; and Evelyn LaRose (Fern), Vernal.
Preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary; Son-In-Law, Jack Adams; Grandson, Vern; parents, two brothers, LaVerle and Dewey; and one stepbrother, Dave; four stepsisters, Roberta, Marjorie, Emma, and Delores.
Funeral service will be held Friday, July 13 at 12 noon. Viewings will be held on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Olpin-Hoopes Funeral Homes, 288 North Main, Heber City, Utah 84032, and Friday 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services at the Duchesne Stake Center
Burial will be in the Fruitland Cemetery, with Military Honors
