CAPTAIN OREN, a retired Mississippi River boat pilot, was 100 years old, born in West Carroll Parish.

He has lived the last few years on the Tickfaw River near Springfield with his son and daughter-in-law, but was a longtime resident of Baton Rouge.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Oren Warren Russell and Ann Pinkston Russell, Baton Rouge; two grandchildren, Francine Ann Russell, Los Angeles, and Scott Durhan Russell, Baton Rouge; a special nephew and wife, John A. and Liz Walker, Baton Rouge; and numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Warren Russell; his parents, Lewis and Janie Castleman Russell; five sisters, Opal Jones, Odra Mathis, Olive Duhon, Dolly Newman and Omah Duhon; and two brothers, Fred Cook and Ogden Russell.

He was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Capt. Russell was a Mississippi River boat pilot for 56 years and his crafts have included yachts, towboats and steamboats. The last 10 years of his career were spent as a pilot on the Delta Queen Steamboat, as well as the Mississippi Queen.

His greatest joys were hunting, fishing and traveling in his Airstream Trailer.

Oren Russell was one of a vanishing breed, and his stories about riverboatin', coon huntin' and the '27 flood will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Gaudin, Beth Gaudin and the wonderful nurses and staff at North Oaks Medical Center for their care and compassion.
