He was the son of Charlie Alexander Atchley and Lillie Rebecca Bryen.
He was a Signalman in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Douglas L Howard. Later he was stationed on the USS "Sub-Chaser" SC-1049 which ran aground during Typhoon Louise.
He was married to Billie Jo Clark on 3 Nov 1946 in Arvin, California. At the age of 24 he went to work for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph as a lineman and was on the crew that strung the wires through Kern Canyon. After his retirement in 1981 he became an insurance agent for Farmers Insurance Group. He worked there until his death. He was the father of three children - Terry, Sandra and Charles.
