Dr. Fry was a prominent Elk and Pythian, and had held high offices in both orders. He was a native of Richmond, being a son of the late Colonel Fry, C. S. A.
Before going to Roanoke he practiced medicine at Coyner's Springs, at one time a famous watering resort owned by the Fry family. For many years he was associated in Roanoke with Dr. Joseph A. Gale, chief surgeon of the Norfolk and Western railway.
His widow is a daughter of Captain Tuley J. Mitchell, of Roanoke. Mrs. Jere Bunting, of Bristol, and Mrs. John W. Plane, of Salem, are sisters; Dr. Bland Fry, of Roanoke; Captain Hugh Fry, C. S. A., of Roanoke county; Edward Fry, of Ivanhoe, and P. Metcalf Fry, of the Jefferson hotel, Richmond, are brothers.
Dr. Fry was exalted ruler of the Roanoke Lodge of Elks during the years, 1893, 1894 and 1895, being the only man honored by the lodge by a re-election to the chair of exalted ruler. He was deputy grand exalted ruler of the State during the year 1896. He represented Roanoke Lodge at the Grand Lodge sessions in 1894 and 1896. He organized Lynchburg, Danville, Bristol and Bluefield lodges, and was made a life member in March, 1900. He was authority on Elk law.
It was the wish of Dr. Frye, expressed on his death bed, that he should be buried in Richmond, and his obsequies will be conducted according to the ritual of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
