He was born March 21, 1916, to Leo and Dorothy (Knopik) Zilka in Culdrum Township of Morrison County. He joined the Army in 1940 and served with the 11th Armored Division in Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Mary Louise Stoltman on Nov. 28, 1945, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls. He worked at C.L. Nelson Construction Co. for 30 years and farmed in Darling Township of Morrison County. He entered St. Otto's Care Center on Nov. 7, 1994. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Randall, Minnesota Knights of Columbus of which he was a 4th Degree, life member of Little Falls VFW Post 1112 and Little Falls American Legion Post 46.
Survivors include his wife; seven sons, David J., Valrico, Fla., Richard B., Hillman, Charles L. and Dennis J., both of Randall, Gregory P., Little Falls, Gerard J., Brainerd, and Benedict F. Jr., Fort Wayne, Ind.; six daughters, Catherine M. Zilka and Mary Beth Zilka, both of San Antonio, Texas, Annette M. Larson, Apple Valley, Bridget A. Yorek, Sobieski, Jean T. Peterson, Little Falls, and Susan L. Erickson, St. Peter; four brothers, Albert, Pine River, Stanley and Louis, both of Little Falls, and Brother Placid Zilka, Dubuque, Iowa; four sisters, Angeline Adams, Sister Serena Zilka and Dorothy Pierzina, all of Little Falls, and Mary Rose Weiland, Hoffman; and 21 grandchildren.
