Excerpt from the Barwick Family History by Dr. Samuel Barwick.
"Joseph graduated from what is now Depauw University when he was a young man and from which institution he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity later in life. He joined the Indiana Conference of th EME Church in 1837 and filled many responsible positions in the pastorate among them Evansville and Indianapolis.
In the fall of 1850 he removed to Jacksonville, IL to accept the Professorship of Latin in the Illinois Conference Female College. He continued to teach until the war of 1861 when he entered the service as chaplain of the 85th Regt III Inf. in which he served until the end of the war. He was then transferred to the Missouri Conference teaching and preaching, part of the time as presiding elder a part of his time as pastor.
In 1886 he took charge of Linneus circuit and for three years he went in and out before us, the living and lovely and beloved pastor of his own church and the devoted friend of all the churches.
Mr. Barwick was married three times- to his last wife, Miss Elisabeth S Treadway, he was married in 1878. Like Zachariah and Elisabeth they have walked together in all the ordinances of the Lord's House blameless.
