Born in the small New England town of Nelson, New Hampshire, Elizabeth was the daughter of Cyrus Osborn of New Hampshire and Betsey Stearns Ayer of Vermont. She married Hiram B. Allen in 1853 in Massachusetts, eventually settling in California where their three children were born between 1860-1873.
