Catherine was baptised 13 June 1830, at St. Raphael's RC Church where she is now buried in the adjacent cemetery. She was the mother of 11 children, marrying Allan McMartin of Glengarry, as his first wife. She died after the birth of her last child, Alexander,in 1875, when she was but 65, on older woman at that time.

Alexander is also buried at St. Raphael's, as is Catherine and Allan's youngest daughter, Janet, who was born in 1872, but died as a young woman, unmarried in 1892 at age 20.
Infant and child death, as well as deaths of young adults was all too common in this era.The annual pregnancies of all ages of mothers weakened them and probably contributed to mortality of birthing as well. Death and mourning rituals were a constant presence at this time, as were christenings and pregnancies. Frontier farming communities centers of large, young families and high mortality.Old age was a luxury few enjoyed.Life was rugged in the farm areas of frontier Canada.
