Born in Glengarry, Ontario, a descendant of early Scottish Loyalist settlers, John McMartin (c.1755-1851) and Ellen Helen Cameron (c. 1759-1865).Eldest daughter of Duncan McMartin and Catherine McDonald, after the death of her mother, Nellie took over many of the responsibilities of raising her many siblings. Known for being religiously very devout and a very strict "elder sister" she was beloved by all her siblings, appreciated more as they grew older. After the early death of her husband, she lived with her two also widowed sisters in Westmount(Montreal), until her death there. She had no children.
