Mrs. Martha L. Branch
Mrs. Martha L. Branch, widow of Mr. James R. Branch, died shortly before 11 o'clock yesterday morning at her home, No. 914 West Franklin Street, in the seventy-seventh year of her age.
Born on June 19, 1831, in Petersburg, Mrs. Branch was the daughter of Dr. W. A. Patteson. who married Miss Anne Harris. Mr. and Mrs. Branch lived in Petersburg until after the war, when they moved to Richmond, and the members of the Branch family became actively identified with the business interests of the city. On July 2, 1869, Mr. Branch was killed by the collapse of the bridge on Vauxall's Island.
Mrs. Branch had been in ill health for about two years before her death. She bore her suffering with a great deal of fortitude, and her death was calm and peaceful. She was a great charity worker and was for many years one of the most faithful and beloved members of St. Paul's Church. For some time she was president of St. Paul's Church Home, and she was also vice-president of the Hollywood Memorial Association.
She leaves five children - Mrs. George McAdams, Mrs. Anne B. Cabell, Mrs. E. H. Bowie, Mrs. Beverly B. Munford and Colonel James R. Branch, of New York.
The funeral services will be conducted from the residence, No. 914 West Grace Street, this afternoon at 5 o'clock by the Rev. Robert W. Forsyth, the rector of St. Paul's Church, assisted by the Rev. J. J. Gravatt. The interment will be made in the Branch section in Hollywood. Following is a list of those who will act as pallbearers:
Colonel Thomas B. McAdams, Robert G. Cabell, James Branch Cabell, W. Russell Bowie, Melville, Branch, H. Godwin Boykin, Blair Pegram, Thomas McCaw.
