Lloyd Samsal, 92, affectionately known as "The Old Guide," died Monday, June 11, 2012 at the Belle Vista Assisted Living Facility in Mesa, Ariz.

A memorial service was held Friday, June 17, at the Belle Vista Chapel, with a grave site service immediately following at Mountain View Cemetery in Mesa.

Lloyd was born May 3, 1920 on the home farm in Columbus Grove, Ohio to Freeman and Edna Samsal. Lloyd married his sweetheart, Geneva, in 1941. They shared a life together for 67 years.

After Lloyd's military service in the Philippines, the couple bought a farm and established themselves as successful dairy farmers in Ohio.

In 1959 he moved his family to Alaska where he lived his dream of becoming a big game guide and pilot. With persistence and determination, passing test after test, he became an air taxi operator/owner, creating Samsal and Son Flying Service; and eventually held the title of Master Guide.

Lloyd was a Life Member of the North American Hunting Club and The Alaska Professional Hunters Association. Working side by side with Geneva, he established the very successful Rainbow River Lodge on the famous Copper River operating it until retirement in 1985. During the winter months he drove school bus until 1975.

After retiring, Lloyd and Geneva enjoyed traveling extensively in their motorhome for several years. For 15 years prior to Geneva's death, and the 4 years since, he enjoyed splitting his time between their home on the Kenai River in Alaska during the summer and their lake home in Sun Lakes during the winter, until moving into the Belle Vista in January.

His many interests included hunting, fishing, photography, and flying (owning 6 different aircraft). He loved the Lord and was faithful to church wherever he was and credited his success to faithful tithing.
Lloyd will be greatly missed by family and friends who enjoyed hearing his stories and tales of his life adventures.

Lloyd is survived by his son Ron Samsal and his wife Judy; daughter Donna McLeod and her husband Clyde; 9 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sisters Dorothy Moore and Jeanette Downing; and brother John Samsal.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva; son, Ed; his parents, Freeman and Edna; and siblings Gerald Samsal and Alice Sommers.

Memorial bequests can be directed to Hospice of the Valley , 777 W. Southern Ave., Ste 301 Bldg C, Mesa, AZ 85210. .Published in The Peninsula Clarion on June 27, 2012
