George Stiffler was born on 12 Jan 1771, probably on the old Peter Stiffler homestead on Dunning Creek near the present Imlertown located about 6 miles North of Bedford Borough, Bedford County, Pennsylvania but it is possible the homestead was not yet occupied at this time. His father, Peter Stiffler, was born 1 Mar 1727 in Württemberger Hof, Baden-Württemberg, Germany and his mother, Catherine Kaufman Stiffler, was born in 1740 in Dunning Creek, Bedford, Pennsylvania.

George spent his boyhood days in the primeval valley and wooded hills of Dunning and Dutch Coves on the Eastern slope of the Allegheny divide. Fort Raystown was changed to Fort Bedford not more than 15 years before his birth. He was a boy between the age 8 to 12 when his father Peter Stiffler and older brother Henry were in the Beford County Militia as "Rangers on the Frontier."

From the number of children born to George and Mary Stiffler before their migration to Ohio in 1803 and also from the 1786 birthdate of their son John which appears on his gravestone, it must be concluded that George married at a very young age probably in 1785 or 1786 when he was only about 15 years old and his wife, Mary was about 16 years of age.

Both George Stiffler and Mary Casebeer, came from families often mentioned in Bedford County records, as the Pennsylvania Archives lists John and David Casebeer along with Peter and Henry Stiffler as soldiers who received depreciation pay for services in the Revolution. The Casebeers came to Tuscarawus County, Ohio probably with the Kniseley- Stiffler migrating party.

George and Mary loaded up their possessions and their children ranging in age from 17 to babies and traveled over wilderness trails, first by the established "Great Road to Pittsburg" trail then lesser defined into Tuscarawus Valley. They were among the first arrivals as it is said that their son Henry, born 5 March 1805, was said to have been the first white child born in Tuscarawus County. David Stiffler had settled 2 1/2 miles east of New Philadelphia and died on that place. George purchased a farm about one mile east where he farmed and did blacksmithing.

They had 14 children:

Peter Stiffler b. abt 1786, Bedford, Bedford, Pennsylvania, d. abt 1807, Bedford, Bedford, Pennsylvania
John Stiffler b. 1786, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, d. 11 Nov 1823, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas, Ohio
Catherine Stiffler b. 13 Apr 1796, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, d. 1863, Ohio
Mary (Polly) Stiffler b. 14 Mar 1796, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, d. 15 Oct 1856
George Stiffler,Jr. b. May 1797, Tuscarawus County, Ohio, d. 15 July 1859, St Charles, Madison, Iowa
David Stiffler b. abt 1800, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, d. 1836, Goshen, Tuscarawas, Ohio
Elizabeth Stiffler b. 1801
Agnes Stiffler b. 1802, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, d. 1823
Susan Stiffler b. abt 1804, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, d. 1901
Henry Stiffler b. 6 Mar 1805, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, Ohio d. 5 AUG 1895, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas, Ohio
Jacob Stiffler b. 10 Oct 1804, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas, Ohio, d. 8 Aug 1895, Radhor, Delaware, Ohio
Sarah J. Stiffler b. 03 Nov 1813, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas, Ohio d. 31 Aug 1893, Geneseo, Henry, Illinois
Esther Hetty Stiffler b. 1817, Bedford County, Pennsylvania
Wesley Sylvester b. 6 Dec 1821, Tuscarawas, Tuscarawas, Ohio, d. 18 Nov 1895, Cooper County, Missouri

This young man still in his 30's and already with a large family had a strong conviction of what the future held as he left the rest of his family living in a pioneer country to migrate over the Alleghanies and 150 miles beyond to the even more unproven wilderness reaches of the Ohio Territory. His younger brother David accompanied them.

The US Military lands of the Ohio Territory were being settled by Pennsylvanians and others from the Eastern seaboard states. John Kniseley of Bedford had acquired 4000 acres along the Tuscarawus River from Godfrey Haga and he needed friends and relatives to go with him to clear and occupy these new lands. Such Bedford County family names as Casebeer, Kniseley, Stiffler, Albright, Romig were common in the new Ohio settlement.

The raising of 14 children by George and Mary, 7 sons and 7 daughters, is evidence of healthy, thrifty and energetic parents as all the children grew to be adults and many reared large families. Peter was an exception as he was unmarried and was a hearty 49er to California but was not heard from again. Their son David was killed by Indians.

Historical accounts credit, and his monument in East Fair Street Cemetery, New Philadelphia, Ohio, acclaim that John Kniseley was the founder of New Philadelphia. Although Kniseley managed the transaction and was looked to as the leader of the party, George and David Stiffler and others from Bedford County were in the group of first arrivals. According to the history of Tuscarawus County, "John Kniseley was a native of Pennsylvania and in 1803 settled on the site of New Philadelphia... laid out the town... build the first cabin. He, with George Stiffler came together, and probably the original settlers of the city."

After his death in Apr 1835, George Stiffler Sr. was actually buried in the churchyard of the first church to be built in New Philadelphia, the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. George was one of the first Elders and was a member of the building committee. The cornerstone of the church wa layed Sept. 11, 1834. On Dec. 15, 1834, George Stiffler set his hand and seal to his last will and testament. On April 6, 1835, the will of deceased George Stiffler was brought into court and proved. The will set forth the names of his fourteen children, 7 sons and 7 daughters.

According to his will, "I give, devise and bequeath to my wife Mary, the plantation situate in the county of Tuscarawas and the state of Ohio...and one pair of working cattle, one plow, one harrow, two cows, three beds and bedding, one bureau, one table, six chairs and such other articles as she may select, not exceeding in amount $20, to have and to hold..."
