His father passed away in 1867 without a Will and so his mother had to petition the court on behalf of her self and children. There she records the names of her children in full.
In 1871 Emery his siblings Marion and Joseph along with their mother Eliza are recorded living with George W Currie and family.
They belonged to the Calvinist Baptist Church
By 1881 Joseph and Emery were still not married living together Joseph farming while Emery was a miller.
On March the 9th 1886 at the age of 37 Emery married Alice Maude Grant.
Together they would raise 8 children.
