He was the son of Aaron and Mary (Parker) Dillie. They were the first residents of Jefferson Township in Jay County, Indiana. They had moved there from Morgan County, Ohio when they purchased federal land in Jay County. They later left Jay County for federal land in Allen County, Indiana.


Harrison lived in Randolph County with his brother A.J. in the 1860 census. He married Angeline Thornburg on Nov. 3, 1860 in Windsor, Randolph County, Indiana.


Harrison served as a member of CO G 54TH Indiana Regiment, Vol Infantry during the Civil War, mostly during the campaign for Vicksburg under Gen. Sherman. His brother, Andrew Jackson "A.J." Dilly (Memorial 22912504) served with him and was wounded at Chickasaw Bayou on Dec. 28, 1862. He was sent up river where he died of his wounds at Paducah, Kentucky. Harrison's only other brother, George Washington Dille (Memorial 129486981) served with Co. C, 35th Illinois Regiment, 14th Infantry and died from wounds that he received at Chickamauga. George was a 1/2 brother. Harrison was the only one of the three brothers to survive the Civil war.


William Henry Harrison Dillie received a pension for his service related illness starting in 1889. In his applications, "Dillie" was spelled nine different ways and he used a wide variety of birth years. He was born sometime between 1833 and 1840! The 1900 census listed April 1836 and that was one of the dates he used on the pension applications.


His first son was born 22 Oct 1862 which was a few weeks before he left for the Civil War. Harrison and Angeline's children were:

Isaac Sherman "Sherman" Dillie b. 9 Nov 1866-d 21 Nov. 1916

Thomas Herbert "Herb" Dillie b. 9 Jul 1874-d. Feb 1964 in Granite City, Madison County, Illinois

Edward Emmett Dillie b. 3 May 1877-d. 5 Apr 1924

Clifford L. Dillie b. Oct 1879-d. bef 1898

There was also an infant daughter.
