Second Oldest Resident
Passes Away Thursday
Almost at the stroke of midnight last Thursday, death called Mrs. Martha Bell, Creighton's second oldest resident.
The city's oldest person is Wenzel Sukup, who will be 96 next September.
Mrs. Bell would have been 92 in April. She had been ill the past year, being partially helpless the greater part of that time.
Funeral services were held at the Hengstler & Son chapel Monday afternoon at 1:30 and burial was made in Greenwood cemetery. The officiating pastor was the Rev. Minar A. Gerrard of the Methodist church.
Martha Lorinda Petty was born in Antwerp county, New York, April 28, 1844. She departed this life Jan. 23, 1936 at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 26 days.
On February 22, 1874 she was united in marriage to Samuel E. Bell. To this union five children were born.
The family came to Nebraska in the year 1887, moving here from Wisconsin. Mrs. Bell made her home in Creighton for the past 47 years.
She is preceded in death by a daughter, who died in infancy and her husband who passed away in 1922.
Those who are saddened by her going are: two sons, William J. and Walter E. of Creighton; two daughters, Mrs. Emma Bradley of Rio, Wisconsin and Mrs. Maude Bailey of Waterloo, Nebr.; nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.
Those who knew her and loved her have not forgotten her thoughtful, kindly ways and cherish her memory as one who thought not of herself but of others.
