She had six* children: Hans, Gustav, Margaretha and Emma. After her husband and oldest son emigrated to the U.S. in November of 1898, she was left alone to care for her remaining 3 children. She supported them by taking in sewing. Maria never emigrated.

Maria was buried at the Friedhof Tonndorf, Ahrensburger Strasse 188, 2045 Hamburg in March 1920 by her daughter Margaretha Bebensee Efftinge Mentzel. The grave was leased for 25 years, for a price of 60 Reich Marks, at which time her remains were removed and the plot sold to another family. In 2012 the plot is free to use.
