Husband of Jochim and Elisabeth (Rebensdorf) Bebensee. Husband of Maria Sievers. Married Maria Sievers on July 7, 1888 who was a servant in the Bebensee household. Gustave grew up in Wandsbek which is a suburb of Hamburg and had been trained as an artist. He and Maria had four children: Hans, Gustave, Margaretha and Emma. In 1898 he and his eldest son, Hans, emigrated to the United States on the SS Bismark. After arriving in New York they made their way to Nebraska where his sister Emma lived with her husband, Louis Haack, and their children. Hans remained with his Aunt Emma and Gustave went on to find work in the decorating business. It was believed he went to San Francisco, California. The family never heard from him after 1906 and it had been assumed that he had died in the San Francisco earthquake, however, this would later be disproved after his great granddaughter began a search for him - a quest that took over 15 years. In 1901 we find him living and in business with a Gerhard Olischlager in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana. They were partners in the Indiana Decorating Company which was located on Main Street. About 1905 he left Lafayette and moved to Indianapolis where he started a new business. He joined the Freemasons at the Murat Temple in Indianapolis. About this same time he married a woman name Jeannette who was born in Ohio in 1878. This may be why the family never heard from him again as his wife, Maria, was still living. By 1910 he and Jeannette are living in the Los Angeles area where he is employed as a decorator. In 1911 they moved to Seattle, Washington where he continued his business and also did some electrical work. In 1914, Gustave, contracted tuberculosis and died on December 7, 1914 at his home. His funeral was paid for by the Freemasons Lodge and to this day his grave is unmarked. His wife Jeannette seems to disappear after his death – maybe one day a record will be found concerning her and more of the mystery revealed. It was 100 years before the mystery of his disappearance would be solved. In many ways it was a blessing that his children never knew that the father they loved so much had deserted them. Interred May 20, 1915. Listed in cemetery records as Gustave Bedensee.
