Ambrose was born in New York in 1803. He immigrated to Canada around in the early 1820s with brother Joshua Legge and other siblings. There he married Elizabeth Howland on the 20th of December 1826. They had 3 daughters and 6 sons in the Leeds and Grenville area. They immigrated to Boone, IL around 1849 where they lived for at least 10 years. Ambrose served in the Civil War as part of the Iowa 6th Volunteer Calvary Co. L. Likely lying about his age saying he was 44 yrs old, he was actually 60 yrs old. He lived in Williamstown, Chickasaw, Iowa when he enlisted Oct. 30, 1862. He mustered out Dec. 23, 1862. He was discharged for disability on Nov. 3, 1864 at Ft. Randall, Dakota Territory. After the war he lived with his son William and his wife Elizabeth for the remainder of his life in Clermont, Iowa.
