Thomas Legge was 18, and living in Fredericksburg, Chickasaw Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. B of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov 10, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861. On Jan 1, 1862, he transferred from Co. B to Co. H. He became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Dec 19, 1863. Along with the rest of his company, Legge was mustered out of the service on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta.

During his term of service, Legge was promoted from Private to 8th Corporal (CPL) on June 1, 1863; to 7th CPL on Aug 1, 1863; to 6th CPL on Sept 10, 1863; to 5th CPL on Jan 1, 1864; to 4th CPL on Aug 1, 1864; and finally to 3rd Corporal on March 1, 1865.

Legge applied for his pension on June 3, 1880. His application is #374,773, and his certificate #217,259.
