Sgt Jack D Anderson, (Flight Engineer) 88th Reconnaissance Squadron (Heavy), 7th Bomb Group, Fort Douglas, Utah. Photo published in "The Salt Lake Tribune" Tuesday, 18 Nov 1941 (p.7)

Jack enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 21 Oct 1939. He trained at Hamilton Field, California likely with the 5th Air Base Group prior to that groups transfer to Ft Douglas operating from the Salt Lake City municipal airport. At the time of his death he was assigned to the 88th Reconnaissance Squadron (Heavy), 7th Bomb Group, Fort Douglas, Utah.

At the time of this loss on Monday 17 Nov 1941 the US Army's air wing had already been re-designated from the Army Air Corps to the Army Air Forces, effective 20 June 1941 to better reflect the growing number of "Numbered" air Forces. The Army Air Corps continued as an administrative arm of the army air service.

Example photo of B-18 Bolo bomber which crashed 17 Nov 1941, Iron Mtn., Pack City, UT

The B-18, Serial Number 311 involved in this event was a standard B-18 produced in the initial Douglas production run, not a B-18A variant i.e. with forward globular ball turret (as some sources suggest).

This plane was assigned to the 6th Air Base Squadron, 5th Air Base Group at Fort Douglas, Utah with air operations from the Salt Lake City municipal airport. The crew members and passengers however were assigned to the 88th Reconnaissance Squadron (Heavy) with Major Pirtle being that squadrons commanding officer. Lt Smith was the exception, assigned to the 11th Bomb Squadron, all components of the 7th Bomb Group headquartered at Fort Douglas, also with flight operations from the Salt Lake City municipal airport.

The plane was on a return flight from Lowry Field, Denver, CO when it encounter blizzard conditions. The crew was ordered to abandon ship 4 miles west of Park City, Utah with the plane crashing into Iron Mountain, elevation: 9018 ft. / 2748 m., a peak in the Wasatch Mountain range.
