Benedict "Ben" Bement is referred to in some records as Benjamin "Bennie" Bement.

He was the first child born in Waubun and spent practically his entire life there. As a youth he helped out at the livery, grooming horses and harnessing teams. He drove Dr. O.E. Campbell and his team of horses to the outlying farmhouses of his patients until the doctor left in 1917. He attended the local school system where he was on its first basketball team in 1922. After his father passed away he worked on the section crew of the Soo Line. In 1926 he started a small service station in a building that later housed a feed mill. In 1930 he purchased the old blacksmith shop, tore it down, and used the lumber to build his new filling station. This corner building housed Bement Ford, Inc. and Bement's Oil Company.

In 1926 Ben bought his first new car, a black touring car, at a cost of $385. In 1932 he was hired by the Deep Rock Oil Company to drive their bulk truck (gas selling for $1.00 for five gallons and fuel oil for 15.5 cents per gallon). In 1938 he purchased the Deep Rock bulk plant which he operated for 35 years until this business was sold in 1972. In 1934 he had a dealership for Plymouth cars and trucks, and was also given the dealership for Ford cars and trucks. During World War II, from 1942 to 1946, Bement's was allotted only two cars and permits were required for their purchase. In 1967 Waubun purchased a new 1967 Ford fire truck from Bement's equipped with a 700 gallon tank and pump, and lights all over. (Source: Supplement to the Bement Chronicles by Spencer L. BeMent (May 1997) as provided by David L. Bement, Waubun, Minnesota) (October 2000)
