Church records at the state archives in Stuttgart, Germany, as well immigration records show that Jacob --- AKA "Fred" --- was born in the town of Dettingen, in what was then known as the district of Urach in the historical German kingdom of Württemberg. This is present-day Dettingen an der Erms, in the district of Reitlingen in the modern German state of Baden-Württemberg. In regard to Jacob's immigration to America, records support a story somewhat different from that told by the wife of Jacob & Emma's 4th son, Christopher Columbus Haas. The records indicate that Jacob arrived in America in March 1869 with his mother (who had remarried after the death of her 1st husband, Jacob's father), his step-father, his older (full) brother and a younger half-brother. Jacob lived in at least Jefferson County, Iowa, as well as Shelby County, Iowa. In the late 1880s, Jacob moved to western Kansas (Lane County) where he was a successful homesteader and active community member. In March 1901, Jacob moved to central Kansas (Marion County), where he continued to be a successful farmer, apparently acquiring quite a bit of land. His cause of death was diabetic coma.
