He was married to Mary Rebecca Miller in September 1900, who preceded him in death, departing this life on February 5, 1927. To this union were born seven children, two daughters dying in infancy and E. L. Jr. died at the age of 16.
Early in life he united with a Baptist Church, later becoming a charter member of New Brandenburg Baptist Church where he remained a faithful member. He was a faithful member of Harrison Lodge No. 122 at Brandenburg, where he would have been a member for 50 years in June.
He leaves to mourn his departure, two daughters, Mrs. Orbit Worley of Brandenburg and Mrs. George Neff of Irvington; two sons, Russell Benham of Louisville and Ernest Benham of Irvington; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Almond Benham of Louisville and Pete Benham of Texas; one sister, Mrs. May Stultz of Valley Station.
Funeral services were held from New Brandenburg Baptist Church with the Rev. T. M. McCarty assisted by Rev. E.B. Stewart and Mrs. Stewart. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
