He was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Chicago, the son of Orlin and Minnie (Kilroy) Abell. He served as a sergeant in the Air Force. He married Mary Ann Oberg on July 2, 1955, in Sterling. Paul was employed by Propheter Construction Co. for 35 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Rock Falls, Union Local 727 Laborers and Union Local 455 Teamsters.
Paul enjoyed fishing, pitching horseshoes and morning coffee with his friends at the Friendship House restaurant.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; two daughters, Diane (Rosendo) Garza of Prophetstown and Sally (Oscar) Canas of Rock Falls; four sons, Paul Abell Jr. of Rock Falls, Mark Abell of Dixon, Peter Abell of Rock Falls and Jeff (Stacey) Abell of Burlington, Iowa; one sister, Chris Delaney of Colorado; four sisters-in-law, Marge Gilmore and Beverly (Elmer) Albus, both of Sterling, Mary Oberg of Florida and Marlene Abell of Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Kerrey Anderson of Rockford, Nicholas Garza and Nathan Garza, both of Prophetstown, and Kristin Castillas and Alex Casillas, both of Rock Falls; one step-grandchild, Kristin Canas; and two stepgreat-grandkids, Chloe and Corbin.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Leona Abell; and two brothers, Otto and Michael Abell.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew Catholic Church, with Monsignor Thomas Dzielak, celebrant, officiating.
Military rites will conclude the service outside of the church. Private burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.
A memorial will be established.
