Mrs. Kate Dewey Davis Dies In Washington
Mrs. Kate Dewey Davis died Saturday, October 23 [1954], in her home at 3821 43rd N. E., Seattle, Washington, after a three-months illness.
She was born in 1869 on the old George Dewey Sr. farm, two miles north of Toulon.
Her family moved to Iowa when she was a small child and resided there until she was seven years old, when they returned to Stark county, Illinois.
Her education was acquired in the schools of Illinois. She graduated from high school with the class of '87 and taught school in different districts in Stark county.
After her father's death in 1907 [George W. Dewey, 1841-1907], she moved with her family to North Dakota and pioneered there for several years.
In 1911 she and John Davis were married. Mr. Davis died in 1913 and Mrs. Davis came west to Okanogan county, Washington, where several of her sisters lived.
Later that year she moved to Seattle to give her niece, Bertha Chase Dewey, the best educational advantages possible. She had cared for Bertha after her mother's death.
She had lived in Seattle for 40 years and was a member of the University Congregational church all of that time.
Surviving are her niece, Mrs. Edward Stone, of Seattle; her step-daughter, Mrs. Clinton Clevenger, of Raleigh, North Carolina; five sisters, Laura Burrus, of Olympia; Diantha Sigrist, Julia McCabe, and Margaret Dewey, all of Tonasket, Washington; a brother, John Dewey, of Olympia, Washington; a grand nephew, Francis Stone, and his son, John Stone, of San Diego, California, and step-grandson, Bradford Davis, of Seattle.
Interment was in Acacia Memorial Park in Seattle.
