Our beloved Reed Vance, age 99, passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sunday, May 9, 1999.

He was born July 13, 1899, in Alpine, Utah, to Isaac Reno and Althera Martin Vance. He was the eighth child of nine boys and three daughters and was the last one called home. His boyhood years were spent in American Fork where at the early age of twelve he alone drove a team of horses carrying sugar beets to Lehi to be sold. He graduated form East High School in Salt Lake City in 1916.He assisted his father with ranching in SE Idaho, 10 years of which he lived in Tyhee, Idaho, where his father was Bishop. It was here he loved to break the wild horses captured by his friends from Fort Hall Indian Reservation. He loved the land and animals. His neighbors will remember the many vegetables and fruits he shared each year from his own garden which he planted until he was 98. Reed learned a strong work ethic, and "make do" attitude as there was always work to be done on the farm, especially with a large family.

Reed received an electrical education at Coyne Electric School in Chicago, then returned to Delta before moving to Salt Lake City in the 1930's after bank closures and financial reverses plagued the family during the depression. He later went into the building insulation business and was a true craftsman in the trade. He built the family home where he resided from 1938 through 1998.

He married Vidella Rushton June 1, 1933 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married 63 years before Vidella passed away June 24, 1996. They had three daughters and two sons. He has been the "patriarch" to his own children and their families as well as to many children and families of his brothers and sisters. He was a gentle man who exhibited no guile. He was loved and respected by all and exemplified charity and unconditional love. He never gave thought to his own needs and always tried to make sure others were not in need. If he had something you needed, it was yours.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities. As a young man he was called on a mission to the Central States Mission from 1924 to 1927 where he served as District President in the Rio Grande Valley. He learned some Spanish there and used it everywhere he went. If he came in contact with anyone who didn't speak English, he'd always talk to them in Spanish no matter what country they were from. He loved sharing the gospel at all times to anyone. He served as a stake missionary and he and his wife served 27 months together on a mission to Sidney, Australia from 1976 to 1979. He served as Bishop of the Wilford I Ward in the 1950's. He helped inaugurate the Adult Aaronic Priesthood Program; was a tour guide on Temple Square; served more than thirty years in the Salt Lake Temple--a calling he thoroughly loved and served there until he was 98 years old.

He is survived by his five children: Barbara Vance of Provo, UT; Carloyn (Rex) Bennion of Layton, UT; Wallace (Judy) Vance of Phoenix, AZ; David (Gloria) Vance of Bountiful, UT; and Shauna (Ron) Riddle of Holladay, UT; 28 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 12, 1999, 11 a.m. at the Wilford Ward Chapel, 3179 South Highland Drive. Friends and family may gather at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 1999 and Wednesday prior to services at the Wilford Ward Chapel from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 South 1700 East, Sandy, Utah.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donation to the LDS Church Mission or Temple fund or a charity of your choice.
