John James JACKSON left school between the ages of twelve or fourteen to go to work to help support his younger brothers and sisters. He probably worked for a mining company, but by the time he married Alice he had a business. He had a bowling alley and pool room with his brother-in-law, Joe McGRAW. This was on Main Street in Frostburg. It was not a very big place but they sold candy, tobacco, root beer and, after prohibition, regular beer. There was an enclosed wagon in front of the building where they sold hot roasted peanuts.
John worked long hours - from about ten in the morning to twelve at night, six days a week. He worked a few hours on Sunday morning. On the other days he came home for lunch, rested a while, back to work, home for dinner about six o'clock and back to work until twelve.
