According to Sarah Blevins Jones 19 Nov 1989, "I find myself hoping that I can stay lucid for at least time to write down some of the Civil War stories told to me by my grandmother who was born 1846 who lost her closest brother; and my great uncle Jay Hugh Blevins who went all through the seige of Vicksburg and who could keep me "wide-eyed" with his Civil War stories. My great grand nieces will be "spell-bound" by these tales."
30 Nov 1990 Sarah went on to say:
"My grandmother Amanda (Taylor) Blevins was born Dec. 1846 and lived until 1938, when I was 32 years old. She told me all about the conditions in the South during the Civil War, how the men (northern sympathizers) rode over the county, stealing food and other things from the old folks and families. She was really something! When women were allowed to vote, my Dad persuaded her to vote. Everyone in the county knew 'Aunt Mandy' and when she came to vote, one of the men holding the election asked her in a joking way if she were voting Democrat or Republican. My Dad told me that she stood as straight as she could, threw her head back and said "you know already how I will vote, it is called Democratic, but I'm still voting Rebel"!! She was a wonderful story teller and so proud of her family. I was lucky to have had her when I was majoring in History and English in college. Now you can see why I'm a Rebel. "
