Lydia M. Shear was born in Virginia, a daughter of Jacob Brant and Mary "Polly" Elizabeth Long Brant. Lydia first married Charles K. Bingham on December 20, 1861 in Prairie DuChen, Crawford Co, Wisconsin. Charles went and served his country in the Civil War. Lydia became pregnant with their daughter Mary Alice Bingham in 1862. Mary was born in April of 1863 and her father Charles died in the Civil War in August of 1863. By all accounts Charles never met his daughter before he died.

Lydia then married Johann August Shear on September 24, 1865. Together they raised Lydia's daughter, Mary and 5 children of their own.
