John William Shear was the second son of Johann August Shear and Lydia Brant Shear. He was born in Warrensburg, Johnson Co, Missouri on February 17, 1875.

John married Myra Lake on August 18, 1898 in Quincy, Adams Co, Illinois. Together they had 10 children - two died in infancy.

John had an older half-sister, Mary Alice Bingham Meyer, a older sister, Anna Mae Shear Boots, a older brother Jacob Henry Shear, and two younger sisters, Margaret "Maggie" Jane Shear Englehardt and Stella Elizabeth Shear Musick.

John farmed most of his life and he enjoyed playing music.
