Major League Baseball Player. He played Major League baseball in the early days of the professional sport, and was one of it's first star pitchers. He played ten seasons with the Indianapolis Blues (1878), the Cleveland Blues (1879 to 1884), the Cincinnati Outlaw Reds (1884), the Providence Grays (1885), the Chicago White Stockings (1885 to 1886) and the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (1887). He twice led the National League in wins, games, games started, innings pitched, and earned run average, and led the league three times in complete games. During his career he won at least 31 games four times, at least 20 games nine times. In 1884 and 1885 he helped the White Stockings (which were what the present day Chicago Cubs were called then) to two consecutive National League pennants. He ended his career after the 1887 season with a Win–Loss record of 265–214, a career earned run average of 2.43, and with 1,704 strikeouts.
