Mrs. Wiley was the eldest daughter of Winstead and Anna Willard Davie, and was born in Jonesboro, March 6, 1830. On Dec. 5, 1850 she was united in marriage with Benjamin L. Wiley, who was a partner with Paul Frick in the hardware business. In 1860 they moved to Makanda where her home has been since. Her husband died in March, 1890. They had nine children, seven boys and two girls. Of these, two daughters, Mrs. Anna (E.F.S.) Leib of Anna, and Mrs. Mary (W.B.) McGuire of Makanda, and four sons, Ben L. of Makanda, Daniel D. of Rocky Ford, Colorado, Charles H. of Anna, and Henry K. of Boise City, Idaho, survive, the latter being the only one who could not reach her for the funeral. Mrs. Wiley was not a member of any church, (her husband was a Quaker), but she has wielded a wider Christian influence than many who are identified as church members. Her family of sons and daughters were reared in such a way that all became influences in the religious world and identified with religious activities wherever they are.
While she was not a regular attendant at church services herself, it was the rule of her household that the children should attend the Sunday school and services of the church regularly. She did not permit the many side issues of the day to interfere with her home duties, nor did she permit her home life to interfere with her charitable work among her neighbors when any of them were in distress. Her death ends a beautiful life. She leaves 27 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
The funeral services at the Wiley home here were conducted Friday afternoon by Rev. F.R. Henry, D.D. The body was taken to Makanda Saturday morning for burial, with a service at the grave conducted by Rev. J.R. Slaten of the Anna Methodist church. ("The Talk" February 13, 1920)
Mention of one deceased son James W Wiley 1873-1893 was left out of the obit.
