Tommie was born on August 31, 1920 on a farm south of Springview, Nebraska, the second child of five, born to Marion H. and Nettie (Carter) Byington. Other siblings are (chronolgically) Miriam, Donna, Donald and Gary.
Tommie graduated from Rock County High School in Bassett, Nebraska in 1938 and married Donavan R. Bower of Ainsworth. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she went to business school to learn bookkeeping and accounting. Three children were born to this union: Richard (1939), Donald (1941), and Ann (1943). She divorced in 1945 and in 1952 moved to Fresno, California where they stayed until 1958 when they moved to the Los Angeles area. She worked in accounting until her retirement at age 65.
Tommie married Jack Crotty in 1972, and they were together until his death during heart surgery in January of 1980. She stayed in California until 1987, when she moved to Bassett where she helped her sister and brother-in-law operate the Sandhills Motel. She then moved to Ainsworth where she helped her son, Don, who operated the Remington Arms Motel.
Tommie loved to travel and had been in every state except Alaska. She also traveled to England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
She is survived by two sisters, Miriam (Clint) Davis of Bassett, Donna DeWeese of North Platte, Nebraska, and brother, Gary Byington of North Port, Florida; her two sons, Richard of Eufaula, Alabama and Donald of Ainsworth, and daughter Ann Fields of Long Beach, California; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
