Walter L. Pufall, age 87, of Ashland, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009, at his residence. He was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Ashland, the son of Anthony and Helga (Pearson) Pufall.
He graduated from Ashland High School in 1941. Walter was in the U.S. Army from Nov. 2, 1942 to Nov. 24, 1944. During WWII, he served in North Africa and Anzio and Sicily, Italy. Walter received the Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Clusters, Expert Infantry Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, Three Bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 90 and a member of VFW Post 690. Walter was a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, DAV, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Past Commanders Club of Wisconsin. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and growing roses. In his younger days, he was a member of the Pufall softball and bowling leagues. Walter also enjoyed doing word search puzzles and jigsaw puzzles.
He is survived by his three daughters, Diane (Scott) White, Seymour, TN, Gail (Agustin) Castellanos, Oceanside, CA and Jeanne (John) Fromholz, Oakdale, MN; six grandchildren, Thomas White, Kenneth White, Michael (Barbie) White, April (Kevin) Drummond, Mark Fromholz and Shelby Fromholz; six great-grandchildren, Dylan White, Austin White, Alyssa White, Phoebe Drummond, Dorian Drummond and Martin Drummond; a sister, Lorraine (Melvin) Johnson, Ashland; two brothers, Lester (Marve) Pufall, Ashland and Donald (Nancy) Pufall, West Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley, on September 10, 1969; and a sister, Dorothy Sturgal, on Feb. 14, 2005.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Frost Home for Funerals, in Ashland, with Pastor Paul Simmons officiating.
Graveside and United Chequamegon Veteran services will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashland.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, and continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the Frost Home for Funerals in Ashland.
