Kate was married to Michael de Young in 1881. Fabulously wealthy the de Young family did not escape tragedy. They were parents of four daughters and one son, Charles. Charles died in 1913, of typhoid fever, the same year Kate became ill with cancer. Kate had a breakdown when her son died and lingered on for four years before she died. Her four daughters never left their father alone during her illness or after her death. All four daughters were known for their beauty. The de Young mansion on California Street in San Francisco was known for it's elegance and collections of every type from around the world, much of which went to the de Young museum, which her husband started. The de Young museum in Golden Gate Park is known around the world for it's beauty, design and objects of art.
