Mrs. Joseph Bond Beall of 777 Madison Avenue has announced the engagement of her daughter, Miss Florence Beall, to Dr. William Mynn Thornton, Jr., son of Professor William Mynn Thornton of the University of Virginia and Mrs. Thornton.
Miss Beall's father, the late Joseph Bond Beall, and her grandfather, the late Jeremiah Beall of Georgia, were among the organizers of the New York Cotton Exchange. Her mother is a daughter of the late Clement Brooke Grubb of Philadelphia.
Dr. Thornton is a graduate of the University of Virginia, and received his degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University. He is a direct descendant of Mrs. Fielding Lewis, the only sister of George Washington. At present he is with the chemical department of the du Pont Powder Company of Wilmington, Del.
The wedding is to take place in February.

The engagement is announced of Miss Ethel Grubb Beall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Beall of 109 West Fifty-fifth Street, to Dr. George Tucker Smith, United States Navy. Miss Beall is descended from the old Georgia Beall family, and her mother was formerly Miss Lilly Grubb of Philadelphia, a cousin of Gen. John R. Brooke, United States Army, and of Gen E. Burd Grubb. Dr. Tucker Smith is of an old Virginia family, and is a direct descendant of Mrs. Fielding Lewis, the only sister of George Washington.
