Doris M. Long, 94, of Creston, passed away Monday, October 17, 2011 at Afton Care Center. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at River of Life Assembly of God Church in Creston. Pastor Karen Norton will officiate. Burial will be private at the Oak Hill Cemetery, near Corning. No visitation will be held. Memorials can be made to the family. Doris May Marvin was born June 20, 1917 in Decatur, Co., Iowa to Mary Jane (Ricks) Marvin and Harry Ray Marvin. Additionally, two other daughters, Thelma and Edna and a son, Raymond, were born to this union. Doris graduated from Leon High School in 1937. On June 9, 1937, Doris married George Dewees and they lived several places before settling in Corning, Ia. To this union, four children were born, Charles, Ernie, Mary and Bonny. After marrying, they lived in Leon and Missouri Valley, before moving to Corning. George died in 1974. Doris was a homemaker and worked at the Casket factory, Corning Café and Nursing Home, moving to Creston in 1974. While in Creston, she worked at Berning's Café as a cook until 1979. On December 31, 1980, Doris married Forrest M. Long. He died in 1983. Doris was a wonderful sport who loved adventure. She loved to go places and see new things. Right up to the end, she enjoyed attending her great grandson's soccer games. She loved flowers, nature and collecting beautiful fall leaves. Doris attended the Assembly of God Church in Creston for the past 18 years and before her eyesight began to fail, loved being involved in Women's Ministries, Church fund raisers, Bible studies and whatever she could find to do she did it, with joy and a willing heart. Doris enjoyed her family. She loved spending times with the grand kids and great grandkids whenever time or opportunity allowed. She took great personal pride and ownership of her four children and had pet names for all of them. Charles became Chuckie, Ernie became Old Ern, Mary was always Molly and Bonny was Bon Bon.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Mary (husband Dave) Miller of Creston and Bonny Campbell of Creston; daughter-in-law, Karen Dewees-Nichols of Earlham; one sister-in-law, June Marvin of Okla; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Iva Marvin; husband: George Dewees in 1974; sons: Charles in 1977 and Ernest in 1998, two sisters, Thelma Pierce and Edna Stoneburner; her brother, Raymond Marvin, a grandson, Tracy Miller, great-granddaughter, Brittney Miller and great-grandson, Jacob Davis.
